Blue Benches: Self-Portrait of a Monster

Anthology Call For Submissions

This anthology is for you if you identify as a “monster”. If you feel different, not fitting into the normal and expected, enjoy special abilities that make society see you as monstrous, if you experience nightmares, or have discovered that you have a “Hyde” double.

This project can help you reconnect with your spiritual ancestors and soulmates. Disfigured WWI veterans in Paris, aerial acrobats on crutches in 1909 New York, Minotaurs lost in their endless labyrinths, mythological shapeshifters, historical figures monstrified by their rivals; these are just a few examples of your possible “ancestors” whose stories are included in this anthology.

Tell us your own story and reach out to your new friends from the past and present. Share your darkest thoughts and nightmares in words, comics, illustrated stories, drawings, paintings, and more. Nothing will be considered too dark, too gory or too terrifying for the participants of this anthology. If you were previously rejected by dozens of literary agents and mainstream publishing houses for these reasons, this is the place for you to be heard. To us, there is no wrong kind of monster.

During WWI, hospitals that treated soldiers with severe facial injuries would set out special benches in front for the wounded to sit on. The benches were painted bright blue to serve as a warning to approaching passerby, so they could avert their eyes to protect themselves from unpleasant sights. These soldiers who had fought and sacrificed for their countries were reduced to invisible men to avoid offending delicate sensibilities. This anthology is for all the unshowables forgotten on the blue benches.

Let’s tear down those benches together!
