When one needs to reignite one’s inner fire, there’s nothing quite as powerful as going back to the original source and communing with the masters.

After tracing the origins of the color palette for my latest graphic novel all the way to a cursed color from 1920s cinema, I was inspired to venture even further in my time travel. I’ve gone off to seek the original source of graphic novelling in the middle of an ancient Egyptian tomb! (And I have a sneaking suspicion the curse of Phantom Red has followed me here, too.)

Seeing those double lines gave me a real sense of kinship with the ancient draughtsman who painted them. To celebrate that special moment, here’s an example of some modern dual-layered preliminary drawing from my recently completed graphic novel, Napoleon’s Starship (coming soon from Wayward Raven Media).
