Guillaume the Toy Maker. Wolf #1.

This week’s post is the first in a new series dedicated to Phantoms of Vendôme – a first introduction to the members of Richard’s underground army of Apollo’s Wolves.

The pilots and mechanics of Richard’s once-famous and unstoppable “Wolf Flight”, now fallen and disgraced alongside their flight leader, continue fighting to restore their military honor and expose the true enemies of France.

Steadfast chief mechanic Guillaume, reveals the tale of a life filled with love and suffering through the “toys” he started crafting back in the trenches of Verdun. Spent shell casings, scraps of corroded metal, fragments of mangled ammunition, pieces of wood, drops of paint; his clever hands transform everything to tell the poignant story of his life.

A humble Picardian farmer, he was devoted to his land and the house built by the hands of his ancestors. He labored untiringly side-by-side with his beloved wife, hoping to secure a prosperous future for their three young children. Life was simple then, full of little everyday joys, gratification in hard work well done, and the warmth of shared love.

Then the War began.
With a few last words of encouragement, his loving bride sent him off to fight for their home. His inventive mind and unique skills with complex machinery landed him in the aviation division, tending fighter biplanes as a mechanic.

The War robbed him of everything he held dear. It burned his land, slaughtered his family, and left him a double amputee mutilé de guerre. Once nicknamed “Atlas” by Richard, Guillaume finds himself with no legs to stand on. A martyr of oft his horrendous war, he finds the strength to rise again and continue fighting.

Through all the trials and horrors he faces, his sense of humor never leaves him. He remains the Atlas of the team, bearing on his shoulders the emotional burden of those who have lost everything in the fires of war.

The weight is heavy, but a good dinner always helps!
